Local tattoo artist Dean Petrie of Skin Wizardry Bellingen believes we should all be inked at least once. We interview this creative artist and find out he’s a lover, not a fighter and yearns for the simple life, albeit with his Harley.
How long have you been a tattoo artist?
I have been inking people for the last 10 years.
What got you started in the industry?
I have always been an artist. Than a mate bought some tattoo guns off the net. He said “Your an artist, tattoo me.”
What do you like about your work?
Everything. It’s a blank canvas with endless possibilities. Tattooing tests my skills and my creative side everyday.
What is the most important skill you have?
Being a good husband & father.
Who should get a tattoo?
Everyone needs ink at least once in their lives.
What is your favourite tattoo?
A chest design of a moose skull.
Tell me why?
The execution of the artwork was really satisfying & the client was extremely happy.
Have you ever said no to a request?
I say no regularly. I think I have a duty of care to advise people what I think.

Horioshi lll. A Japanese master of ink.
What was your previous career?
Security Guard with Armaguard.
What were you packing?
A 357 Magnum & a Shotgun.

Your best sporting moment was?
98% average on the shooting range.
I was only kidding with that crack about the kids gun.
Any future plans?
To go on more holidays. Happy wife, happy life.
Your best memory of childhood was?
Camping and learning about nature. I really enjoy knowing how to survive in the bush.
What would you like to be remembered for?
My art and my friendly nature.
Friends say that you are?
Just an all out good bloke.
What do you avoid in life?
Making things complicated. KISS theory applies.
What are you reading right now?
I prefer drawing to reading.
What secret can you share with us?
Steamrollers don’t roll steam.
Life could be simple again.

The best lesson your parents taught you?
Respect & compassion.
The last big belly laugh you had was?
Listening to sailing stories of my late father in law.
If you were PM, what would you do?
Sack the government and start again.
What made you come to Bellingen?
We were looking for a safe environment to bring up our children. Bellingen was a good choice.
What project are you currently working on?
A wood sculpture.
How do you relax?
Riding my Harley Davidson.

The Old Butter Factory Cafe.

The previous career you wish you could forget?
Furniture removal in North Sydney.

Thailand for their culture.
