Photographer Bruce Jacups, I Love Bello Shire, Bellingen

Our featured photographer Bruce Jacups started capturing images on his first Instamatic at the age of 11. The images adorning our site this month reflect his eclectic style and amazing ability for capturing the moment. Despite having an assortment of careers including bush regeneration, private investigation, real estate, stone masonry and timber joinery, photography has always remained his passion.  He credits his time as a Private Investigator for developing his skills of observation with the camera.

Like so many other Bellingenites, Bruce relocated to the Bellingen Shire 21 years ago with his partner (at the time) and 2 month old daughter for a lifestyle change.  During his time here he has utilised his skills as a licensed carpenter to build a few houses for himself and others.  His love of timber led to ‘Bellingen Timbers’, which was created 12 years ago.  Bruce has produced joinery for for the local domestic and commercial markets.  “Many doors, windows and bench tops are mine in the town cafes and shops..including Amelia Franklins ,Hearth Fire, Black Bear, the music shop and Vivid” says Bruce.  However for the past 10 years Bruce has really rekindled his love of photography and today it is his primary career.

Photographer Bruce jacups, I Love Bello Shire, Bellingen, Dorrigo, UrungaBruce’s photographic style is spontaneous.  He describes himself as “an opportunist, rarely creating or setting up a photo…it just appears before me.”  His subject matter is varied.  He favours music festivals, art and live bands, but acknowledges that living in Bellingen has brought “the naturalist out” where he is able to “capture the natural environment in her extremes.” “Observing light and movement whether it’s clouds, facial expressions or a wing flap” is Bruce’s best advice for aspiring photographers.  “Experimenting with your camera and learning basic editing are also essential.”
