Anticipation is building as we prepare for an immersion into the arts. Public spaces, shopfronts, art studios, galleries and cafes from the plateau to the seaboard are currently being adorned with art in all its forms, in readiness for Bellingen Shire Arts Week, January 10th-17th.
After a year of cancellations and disappointments, Arts Week 2021 will provide an opportunity for the Bellingen Shire community to come together to celebrate our creative community, rich in talent and originality. An eclectic collection of exhibitions, workshops, talks, demonstrations and performances aimed to appeal to all ages and tastes, promises to enrich our lives and hopefully set the tone for a positive year ahead.
There are more than 140 exhibitions and activities to choose from right across the Shire, providing participants with not only a visual or aural feast, but also an opportunity to learn a new skill. Try your hand at memoir writing; be a part of a street performance; learn a musical instrument or the ancient skill of Shibori Indigo Dyeing. Workshops in music, woodwork, model making, ceramics plus more will be happening across the Shire throughout the week. And in true community spirit, Dorrigo artist Sandra Pitkin invites participants to come together to create a large sculpture using bamboo, wire and cable ties.
For the young or young at heart there is an art treasure hunt in random locations across the Shire- so keep your eyes peeled! Or become an art activitist, exploring pressing issues through collective art, activists of all ages welcome. Kids might also be interested in joining the Dorrigo Drama Trail or a Gondwana Rainforest tour.
And for many of us wanting to be quietly inspired or entertained, the week is full of stunning visual art exhibitions, performing arts and musical concerts for our sheer enjoyment.
The hardworking team of volunteers responsible for making this dream come alive include John Conway, Rosie Wickert, Linda Coomber ( Urunga), Sandra Pitkin ( Dorrigo), Stuart Allardice, Julie Hutchinson, Sandy Radke and Maggie Porter co-ordinator. They have spent months in the planning and are ready for all contingencies, including regularly updating Covid-safe practices for all activities and exhibitions.
