Bellingen Farmers & Producers Market – Belingen Park

August 10 @ 2:30 pm - 5:30 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 2:30 pm on Wednesday, repeating indefinitely

Bellingen Farmers & Produce Market every wednesday at the bellingen showground.

The weekly market will offer fresh fruit and vegetables, eggs and meats along with delicious and healthy pre-prepared meals from our seasonal café to take home and enjoy with your family.

The Mid North Coast is one of the country’s most fertile areas. The new market has already attracted a number of local growers and excitement builds as the market is seen as a first step in a wider regional push for branding the region with its lush abundance and plentiful waterways as one of the best food-producing areas in NSW.

Market organiser Louise Hensby feels that one of the reasons for the strong local support is that the market is based on the key philosophies of an authentic farmers market and is accredited under both the NSW Farmers Market Alliance and the Australian Farmers Market Association.

“Today’s consumers are seeking fresh, local and seasonal produce and our farmers are seeking a reliable food-retailing mechanism,” says Louise. “The market aims to meet both those needs with all food being sourced from within a 200km radius and no produce brought in from capital city markets or on-sellers.”

“Farmers markets offer something truly unique in that the customer can meet and speak directly with the person who produces the food.  We have such a great bunch of local farmers, and some fabulous stories to share,” enthuses Louise.

Weekly farmers markets play a vital role in supporting local food production and systems across the globe. They are the place where consumers can buy their weekly groceries knowing not only that they are supporting a local farmer (and a local business), but also that they are purchasing nutrient dense food for their family.  A recent article in Forbes Magazine indicates that authentic farmers markets are a key trend shaping food production across the world.  Consumers seek a more direct connection to their food as communities strive to get closer to nature.  The global shift is seeing another benefit in that it is attracting a new breed of farmer, many with university degrees.
